Strong storms back in forecast

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Strong to severe thunderstorms are forecast today for Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri, including the Joplin area.

In a statement released today, the National Weather Service forecast office at Springfield said this afternoon will be capable of producing strong winds gusts, hail to the size of quarters and frequent lightning.

Heavy rainfall also will be possible for areas north of Interstate 44 as thunderstorms move over the same locations. Total rainfall amounts of one to three inches, with locally higher amounts, may lead to flooding in some area.

Thunderstorms will be ongoing through Tuesday and could linger into Wednesday, producing heavy rainfall and frequent lightning.

There are additional chances for storms on Friday and into the weekend.
