Joplin school board to begin interviews to fill open position

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin Board of Education will begin interviews to fill an open seat during a special meeting Thursday at the administration building, 3901 E. 32nd St.

So far, four people have applied for the position: Steve Drewes, general manager at Downstream Casino and Resort; Anne Wells, a Joplin attorney; Joan Phillips, past president of the Joplin High School band booster club; and Dawn Sticklen, freelance writer and co-owner of Sticklen and Crosthwait Law Firm.

“We need that seventh board member seated immediately,” Board president Randy Steele said today.

The board will formally announce the new member at its next regular board meeting on Tuesday, June 26.

Board member Ashley Micklethwaite resigned last month after accepting a new position with Mercy Health Systems in St. Louis. Her replacement will serve the remainder of Micklethwaite’s term through April 2013. The appointed member can then stand for re-election at that time.

All of the candidates with the exception of Sticklen will be interviewed Thursday. Sticklen will be interviewed during a 4:30 p.m. meeting on Monday due to scheduling conflicts.

All applicants received questions from the board in advance, Steele said. They will be asked about their public service background, why they want to serve, what they see as the main responsibilities of the board, what the district’s greatest strengths and weaknesses are and what they personally could bring to the board.
