Severe storms possible for Joplin area today

JOPLIN, Mo. — Strong to severe thunderstorms, capable of producing downburst winds and one-inch hail, will be possible this afternoon across the Joplin area, according to the National Weather Service forecast office at Springfield.

The thunderstorms, characterized as scattered by the forecast office, will likely occur between 1 and 10 p.m. today.

The chance for rain is 30 percent.

Temperatures will once again reach into the upper 90s to near 100 degrees. The hottest temperatures will be over Southwest Kansas and parts of western Missouri.

Dry vegetation and low humidity in the afternoon will present an elevated risk for wildfires. Lightning and winds from thunderstorms might spark grass and brush fires where heavier rains do not occur.

Organizers ambitious in goals for this year’s Heart Walk
