JOPLIN, Mo. — Fire investigators arrived early this morning at the scene of a fire that destroyed two buildings Tuesday night at the southwest corner of 16th and Main streets.

“They arrived at 7:30 a.m. to start digging it out,’’ said Keith Stammer, director of emergency management for Joplin and Jasper County. “We have no idea as to a cause of the fire.’’

Stammer said it might take some time for investigators to determine what happened.

A fire-fighting unit was on standby at the scene this morning to monitor for potential flare-ups.

Stammer said no firefighters were injured battling the blaze, which destroyed a former Mays Drug Store building at 1600 S. Main St., and Bucklin’s Furniture, 1608 S. Main St.

Stammer said motorists should expect the 1600 block of Main Street to be closed to traffic most of today. Traffic is being detoured to side streets.

Electrical power to the area was cut off Tuesday night. It has been restored, except in the immediate area of the fire.
