Strong storms back in forecast; flash floods also possible

JOPLIN, Mo. — Thunderstorms, some of them strong to severe, will increase in both coverage and intensity throughout the rest of the day across the Joplin area, according to the latest hazardous-outlook briefing by the National Weather Service forecast office at Springfield.

Some storms will be capable of producing wind gusts of 60 mph and hail the size of quarters.

An isolated tornado also will be possible.

The storms will produce areas of torrential rainfall later today and overnight. With the ground already saturated, flash flooding will be possible.

A flash-flood watch is in effect from this afternoon through the weekend.
