Photos released in mosque arson probe

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department released three photographs Thursday of a man authorities are calling “a person of interest” in an apparent arson attempt at a mosque west of Joplin.

Firefighters responding to a report of something burning on the roof of the mosque at 1302 S. Black Cat Road at 3:37 a.m. Wednesday were able to limit damage to some shingles. But the suspicious fire drew state fire marshals and the FBI to the scene.

The photos taken by a security camera on the property of the Islamic Society of Joplin depict a man outside the mosque about the time of the fire. The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who recognizes the man or has any other information about the crime to contact Detective Tim Williams at (417) 358-8177, extension 1223.
