Memorial banners to mark the route of annual run

JOPLIN, Mo. — Banners bearing the names of those who died as the result of 2011 tornado are being planned to display along the route of the Joplin Memorial Run 2013, organizers said today.

Families of those who died will be given the first opportunity to donate the money to have the memorial banner made in remembrance of their loved one. Community members and companies will be able to donate toward those flags starting Jan. 1, said Audie Dennis, president of Active Lifestyles Inc.

Olympic medalist and top cross-country runner Deena Kastor will be the speaker next year for the run’s banquet May 17, the run’s producer, Ruth Sawkins of Rufus Racing said.

The Joplin Memorial Run’s theme is “Run, Remember, Rebuild.” It will be held next year on Saturday, May 18. About 3,000 runners participated last year.

Formerly a run affiliated with the Boomtown  Days Festival, it was converted to a memorial run as a result of the tornado, which took the lives of 161.
