Baxter Springs mayor accuses city clerk of receiving free cable service

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Mayor Jenifer Bingham at Tuesday’s Baxter Springs City Council meeting accused City Clerk Donna Wixon of receiving free cable television service.

The service is a city utility.

Wixon said outside the meeting she was authorized by the Council to receive the service for free, because she was required to monitor the system, so she could call the out-of-town technician if there was a problem. Councilman Gary Allen confirmed the arrangement during the meeting.

Bingham on April 10 appointed people to replace Wixon and police chief David Edmondson, but the Council in a 6-2 vote rejected the appointments. The following day, Bingham suspended Wixon with pay. At a subsequent meeting, the Council voted to return Wixon to her job and Bingham again suspended Wixon within a few days.

The Council again voted to restore Wixon to her job on Tuesday and she was back at work Wednesday morning.

Also Tuesday, a charter ordinance removing the mayor’s appointment powers was introduced, to come to a vote on May 22.
