Via Christi Hospital under new Ascension Health sponsorship

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kan., part of Via Christi Health, has become part of Ascension Health, the largest Catholic and largest nonprofit health system in the nation.

The change in sponsorship or ownership is effective today.

“We are pleased to fully become a part of Ascension Health and believe this agreement will strengthen Via Christi and Catholic health care nationwide,’’ Jeff Korsmo, president of Via Christi Health, said in a statement.

Via Christi Health and two other regional health systems that comprised the Marian Health System have joined Ascension Health. Marian Health System in August announced plans to enter into an agreement with St. Louis-based Ascension Health Alliance, parent organization of Ascension Health.

The agreement was reached last month, a hospital spokeswoman said. Terms of the agreement are confidential.

Via Christi has been an affiliate of Ascension Health since 2007 when one of its sponsors, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita, joined other St. Joseph congregations to form the Congregation of St. Joseph, which is part of the sponsorship structure of Ascension Health.

Via Christi’s other sponsor, the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mothers, has operated three regional health systems — Ministry Health Care in Wisconsin and Minnesota, St. John Health System in Oklahoma, and Via Christi through the Marian Health System since 1989.

Via Christi Hospital broke ground Nov. 19 on a new 40,000-square-foot surgery center. The center will feature five operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms, pre- and post-operating and recovery rooms and a minor procedure room. There also will be a new family waiting area, which will put families closer to physicians, patients and nurses during surgeries.

Completion of the project is expected by spring 2014.
