JOPLIN, Mo. —
Metro Emergency Transport System, the ambulance service most people know simply as METS, this month celebrates its 30th anniversary.
The celebration will include an open house on Sunday, May 20.
METS officials and crew members recalled the service’s mot challenging day, on May 22, 2011.
Jason Smith, director of emergency medical services for METS, said he couldn’t be prouder of how his people performed after the tornado. He said initially, when an ambulance drove into a neighborhood, people would crowd around it and hop on board.
“In about the first two hours, we probably transported about 250 patients,” Smith said.
