Joplin gets two awards from Missouri Arts Council

Two Joplin arts organizations are among 331 statewide to share $4.33 million in awards from the Missouri Arts Council in fiscal year 2013, a division of the Missouri Department of Economic Development.

Pro Musica, which supports instrumental music, will receive $16,432. The Spiva Center for the Arts, which supports the visual arts, will receive $15,584.

Also receiving awards were The Community Theatre for Southwest Missouri, Carthage, $2,549; the Mount Vernon Community Betterment Council, $3,008; Cottey College, Nevada, $2,515, and Stockton Area Chamber of Commerce, $2,000.

The awards in those communities will be used for theater, community arts projects, lecturers and artists, and festivals.

“These grants are crucial to helping move Missouri’s economy forward and fortifying the cultural welfare of Missouri communities,’’ said Beverly Strohmeyer, director of the Missouri Arts Council.

The Missouri Arts Council awards grants to organizations to stimulate the growth, development and appreciation of the arts in Missouri. This funding makes possible quality arts programming to communities throughout Missouri.

Joplin was honored in February by the Missouri Arts Council as the 2012 Creative Community.
