Details about AmeriCorps grant to be released Wednesday

JOPLIN, Mo. — U.S. Rep. Billy Long, R-Mo., will join Wendy Spencer, chief executive officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service on Wednesday to announce a three-year AmeriCorps grant to support rebuilding efforts in Joplin.

Details of the grant have not been released yet.

Since the first team of AmeriCorps members arrived in Joplin just hours after the May 22 tornado struck, more than 350 AmeriCorps members from across the country have traveled to Joplin, providing vital services and coordinating more than 75,000 volunteers.

More than two dozen AmeriCorps members are still serving in the city, and the new grant will more than double AmeriCorps presence.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages more than 5 million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, Social Innovation Fund, and other programs, and leads the national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
