Akin announces new support during campaign stop in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin told supporters in Joplin early Wednesday that he had picked up new financial support and backing from two prominent Republican senators.

Akin’s stop in Joplin came the day a deadline for him to withdraw from the race, which was a demand of some party leaders after he said in a St. Louis television interview that women rarely get pregnant in cases of “legitimate rape.”

Republican support is starting to return since the deadline has passed, Akin said, announcing that he had received endorsements from former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum and Sen. Jim DeMint, plus promises the two would come to Missouri in support of his campaign.

Akin said demands that he withdraw had come from an element of the party that favored “more liberals in the Senate, but the voters gave me the sacred trust to replace Claire McCaskill.”

Akin spoke outside at Republican headquarters on East Seventh Street to a crowd that gathered despite light showers.
