Rally being organized in Joplin to support Islamic community following mosque fire

JOPLIN, Mo. — Hundreds of Joplin residents and others today are showing support for the Islamic Society of Joplin by indicating they will attend a rally scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, at Landreth Park.

The rally follows a suspicious fire early Monday that destroyed the mosque at 1302 S. Black Cat Road.

Ashley Carter, 20, a student at Ozark Christian College, is helping organize the rally. She said the idea originated when she began texting and e-mailing friends to discuss what they could do to help.

She said the theme of the rally is titled “Neighbors.”

“It’s all about loving your neighbor. The power of love is greather than the power of hate. That’s what this is all about,” she said.

She said several bands in the community have agreed to perform and more details are being worked out.

“It’s important that people see that we are going to be a community of love, whether it’s the tornado or anything else,” Carter said.

The FBI in conjunction with the ATF, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri Department of Fire Safety are currently investigating the fire.
