JOPLIN, Mo. —
A group of youngsters was part of a worldwide attempt Tuesday to set a record for the world’s largest swimming lesson.
Beth Patterson, an 11-year-old from Joplin, was hoping that the attempt would be successful.
“I can tell all my friends I’m in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records,’” she said excitedly.
Seventeen people, mostly children, participated in the local effort, which took place in the swimming pool at Young Gymnasium at Missouri Southern State University.
The event was synchronized with the same effort in other cities around the nation and the world. The current record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson stands at 24,873 participants, representing 15 countries across five continents.
