Worker injured at new hospital site

JOPLIN, Mo. — A construction worker injured in a fall Thursday at the site where the new Mercy Hospital Joplin is being built was reported to be in fair condition at a local hospital.

Joplin police and fire officials confirmed that a worker was injured at 4:23 p.m. Thursday. The worker fell about 30 feet and landed on the fifth floor of the structure under construction at the interchange of Interstate 44 and Joseph Hearnes Boulevard, city officials said.

Angie Saporito, a media relations specialist with Mercy, said she was told the worker was wearing a harness as a safety precaution at the time. She said the project contractor reports that the worker is in fair condition but is expected to remain in the hospital for a couple of days.

Neither the contractor nor the hospital were releasing the name of the worker for privacy reasons, Saporito said. But Ryan Felton, project director for McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., released a statement saying the company is investigating the accident.

"Our first concern is always the safety and well-being of our employees and all others on site," the statement said.
