A series of workshops will be held in Joplin by the Fuller Center for Housing for people interested in getting information about becoming first-time homeowners.
The two-hour workshops on topics related to home buying and owning will be held by the center from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays at South Joplin Christian Church, 1901 Pearl Ave.
The first session on Tuesday, Jan. 15, will focus on “Make Your Money Count.”
It will teach strategies for paying a mortgage and other living expenses. Janet LaFon, family financial education specialist with the Missouri Extension Center at Carthage will be the speaker.
Other topics will include home maintenance, including spotting potential problems and doing minor repairs; keeping a home insured; pride in ownership including keeping up a yard and being a good neighbor; keeping the home and family safe; and the importance of credit and maintaining a good credit rating.

Area pools ready for plunge; Schifferdecker opening still to be announced
Though this week’s mild temperatures may not signal swim season, most area pools are ready anyway. And, the mercury should rise a little this weekend to help those anxious to dive in. Joplin Board of Education to decide fate of East Middle School teacher
