JOPLIN, Mo. —
EaglePicher Technologies announced Wednesday that it has been selected by ATK Launch Systems in Utah to design and build a commercial Battery Energy Storage System.
The Battery Energy Storage System, or BESS, is a 1.2 megawatt-hour system that ATK will use at its 20,000-acre manufacturing site in Promontory, Utah.
The large battery system stores energy from alternative sources produced at peak hours, such as wind and solar, and then provides a steady feed of that energy to the grid.
EaglePicher unveiled a 2 megawatt-hour demonstrator model last year at its Crossroads plant in Joplin.

EaglePicher, which has produced batteries for the manned space missions, including the Apollo program, for Martian lander and for the Hubble Space Telescope, is aggressively developing battery solutions in the merging Grid Energy Storage Market.
