JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Akin for Senate campaign picked Tuesday — the last day the candidates could withdraw from the Senate race — to join officials from a number of conservative and religious groups on a state-wide bus tour.
Todd Akin will meet with Joplin area supporters at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Jasper County Republican campaign headquarters at 3950 E. Seventh St., in Duquesne.
The bus tour started in St. Louis and includes officials form the Eagle Forum, Missouri Baptist Convention, Concerned Women for America and the American Family Association.
Akin came under fire from the party hierarchy after he said women who are victims of legitimate rape rarely get pregnant. The remark, for which Akin apologized repeatedly, drew calls for him to get out of the race, but he since has received the backing of other Republicans, including former Gov. Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich.
