WEBB CITY, Mo. —
Chuck Surface, a former state representative, Jasper County Commissioner and Webb City’s Economic Development Director since 2007, died Wednesday after a battle with cancer. He was 68.
Those who knew him said he was committed to seeing Webb City prosper and grow.
“He wanted Webb City to become a part of the culture of Missouri. He wanted to make sure Webb City was not left behind,” said City Administrator Carl Francis. “He was out front working hard to promote our history, and promote our future too. He was always out there pushing Route 66, going to Jeff City to meet with people about what we have to offer.”
He served in the Missouri House of Representatives for 18 years, and was an insurance agent for 29 years. He also served as presiding Jasper County Commissioner from 2003 to 2006, and was appointed to the Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors by Gov. Jay Nixon.
His list of past community service was noted at last year’s Webb City Chamber of Commerce banquet, where he was awarded the R. J. Baker Champion Booster Award.
He resided in Joplin with his wife Sherry. Survivors include three children and one granddaughter.
Funeral services for Chuck Surface will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ Church of Oronogo. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at Christ Church on Sunday.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home in Webb City. Contributions may be made to Joplin Elks Lodge Christmas Basket Program or Joplin Humane Society.
