Tornado watch for Joplin area in affect until 10 p.m. today

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Joplin area is under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service forecast office at Springfield.

A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of a tornado.

Supercell thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon along the Interstate 35 corridor of south-central Kansas and north-central Oklahoma. The storms will track to the north and east later in the day.

Hail to the size of golf balls, damaging straight-line winds and isolated tornadoes will be possible if the supercells reach into Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma.

Additional scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected across the region later tonight. Some of these storms may produce hail the size of quarters, frequent lightning and local heavy rainfall.
