Storms today could be severe

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A cold front that will sag into the Joplin area this afternoon could trigger some strong to severe storms.

The National Weather Service forecast office at Springfield, in a statement released at 5 a.m. today, said enough instability will exist to create an elevated threat for strong to severe storms.

Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail the size of quarters could accompany the storms.

Frequent lightning strikes and brief bouts of heavy rainfall also can be expected with the storms, which will likely form along and south of Interstate 44.

Heat index values will range from 100 to 106 degrees this afternoon.
