Galena school district invites public to weigh in on proposed building project

GALENA, Kan. — The Galena Board of Education has slated a public input session for 5:30 p.m. Friday at the James C. Christman Performing Arts Center for a building project that would require a bond issue of approximately $6.5 million.

“We want the community to come and weigh in,” said Superintendent Brian Smith. “The school is the heart of our community, is used by the community, and we want it that way.”

Smith said the district has hired an architect, Chad Greer with Corner Greer & Associates of Joplin, to conduct feasibility studies, create initial renderings and conduct surveys starting in January. A final cost won’t be determined until after the public weighs in on all aspects of the project.

The project would include a new gymnasium to replace the current gym, which Smith said dates to about 1963, and also would include additional classrooms at Spring Grove Primary School and Galena High School.
