Stormy weather forecast today for Joplin region

Scattered thunderstorms, with occasional lightning and heavy downpours, are possible this morning and later today as a cold front moves across Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri, according to the National Weather Service forecast office at Springfield.

Isolated to widely-scattered thunderstorms are expected across the region this morning. The main threats from these storms will be lightning strikes and brief, but heavy downpours.

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected this afternoon. Damaging straight-line winds over 60 mph and hail to the size of quarters are possible with these storms. Frequent lightning strikes and heavy downpours also will be hazards with these storms.

Additional thunderstorms will be possible overnight.

Afternoon heat-index values will reach into the mid-90s over Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas, the National Weather Service said.
