MU arrives in Joplin for governor’s Habitat challenge

Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity and the Governor’s Challenge continues with another team workday today.

This one involves the Mizzou Tigers and will be the fourth visit by the University of Missouri through the Governor’s Challenge. Today, MU volunteers will be painting houses in the 2500 and 2600 blocks of Virginia and Pennsylvania avenues.

Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity has completed 20 houses following the tornado and has 30 other houses under construction. They also are planning to begin 22 more houses this year.

Many of these houses are in connection with the Governor’s Challenge, a partnership between the state of Missouri and major sports teams of Missouri, including the Royals, Cardinals, Chiefs, Rams, Blues, Tigers and NASCAR Kansas Speedway.

Mike Matheny, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, along with other players and officer personnel, will be in Joplin Monday as part of the Governor’s Habitat for Humanity Challenge. Mark Mc

According to the Cardinals, president Bill DeWitt and general manager John Mozeliak also will be in Joplin. Mark McGwire, the home run hitter, also is expected.
