From staff reports
JOPLIN, Mo. —
The American Red Cross Southern Missouri Region is seeking nomations for its Everyday Heroes for 2013. The nominating period will remain open through Jan. 15 and is for events after March 1, 2012, according to Debi Meeds, CEO for the Southern Missouri Region.
According to Meeds, a hero may be someone who has rescued a neighbor or family member from a fire or an accident, but it is bigger than that. It also might be a person admired for his/her achievements in the community, or a volunteer who has made a difference helping others.
The 2012 honorees included Alexis “Lexi’’ Prater, who alerted her parents that a bad storm was approaching on May 22, 2011, as they were cooking dinner. Her parents were not overly concerned, initially, but Lexi, who was 8, insisted they get to shelter. Their home was destroyed but the family was safe.
Robert Wilson also was honored last year for helping or saving nearly 40 men, women and children after the tornado.
Rebecca Humphreys, a senior at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, is another who was recognized. She was saddened by the loss of so many old trees in Joplin’s established neighborhoods and organized “A Tree Grows in Joplin,” which helped provide more than 4,000 trees for the re-greening of Joplin and $21,000 in donations to the Red Cross.
Meeds also noted that teachers who have made a difference in the lives of their students also have been honored.
People who want to nominate an Everyday Hero can do so by visiting the Red Cross web page at www.redcross.org and typing in the Joplin zipcode, or going to facebook. They also may send in an e-mail to the executive director of the Joplin chapter of the Red Cross at firstname.lastname@example.org, or they can go by the Joplin office at 410 S. Jackson Ave. and pick up a nominating form.
An event to honor those selected as heroes will be held on March 27 at The Ramada Oasis Hotel & Convention Center in Springfield
