Bitter cold, freezing drizzle forecast for region

JOPLIN, Mo. — A blast of cold Canadian air will descend on the Joplin area after midnight, creating the possibility for freezing drizzle.

In a statement released this afternoon, the National Weather Service forecast office in Springfield said any freezing drizzle that falls will quickly form a thin glaze of ice on exposed surfaces.

Andy Boxell, a NWS meteorologist, said the freezing drizzle will be patchy and will likely continue Friday morning as the cold front moves across the region.

Wind-chill values will fall into the single digits to near 10 degrees late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

A storm system is expected to bring precipitation to the region late Sunday night and through the day on Monday. Boxell said some of that precipitation is expected to fall as accumulating snow. He said it is still too early to determine snowfall amounts.
