Pittsburg company doubling in size, expands payroll

PITTSBURG, Kan. — A nearly 100-year-old business broke ground today — well, almost — for a $1 million expansion.

A steady rain moved the ceremony and the traditional gold shovels inside Atkinson Industries, which opened in Pittsburg in 1919, but company executives and city officials were all smiles, nonetheless.

The company is adding 10,000 additional square feet to its existing 10,000-square-foot plant in the Pittsburg Industrial Park.

“We have doubled the business in the past year and a half, added 40 employees, and we continue to see growth,” said Gary Mattson, human resources manager. “We ran out of space and can’t hire any more engineers or sales or project managers because of that. We have to put in some infrastructure to accommodate that.”

Mattson said the company, which now has a payroll of 111, probably will add another 20 employees in the coming year.
