Filing period opens next week for Joplin school board seats

JOPLIN, Mo. — Filing for two open seats on the Joplin Board of Education will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, and will continue through Jan. 15, 2013.

Anyone interested in running for a position on the board can file for candidacy at the district’s administrative offices, 3901 E. 32nd St., during regular business hours, which are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The offices will be closed during inclement weather and between Dec. 24 and Jan. 1.

There are two positions available. Each carries a three-year term.

Organizers ambitious in goals for this year’s Heart Walk
Organizers of the Four-State Heart Walk, to be held in September in Joplin, are ambitious: Last year’s event raised about $27,000, while this year they have set a goal of $50,000. So far, $17,500 has been raised. Among the donors to date: Two students at Nevada High School who put on a fundraiser in February as a class project and brought in $2,500.
