  • Downtown Joplin group puts CID proposal on hold

    An effort to establish a community improvement district as a way to promote Joplin’s downtown has been put on hold. Trisha Patton, executive director of the Downtown Joplin Alliance, said the alliance board voted Tuesday to table the effort based on the views of downtown property and business owners.

  • Park Board endorses design for mural park in Joplin

    A design for a plaza where a Route 66 tile mural is to be installed downtown is proposed at $160,000. The Joplin Park Board agreed at a meeting Tuesday to recommend that the City Council approve the proposed design. The design is to be presented to the council at its regular meeting Monday.

    While people may look at Route 66 as a nostalgic bygone, it’s actually a 2,500-mile-long economic corridor to the future. Cities like Joplin and Galena, Kan., are learning to mine the historic route for attractions that result in development, much as they did lead and zinc before the highway arrived here.
