JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Joplin School District has introduced its Adopt-a-Classroom program as a way to help school officials achieve the goal of students returning to classes on Aug. 17.
Under the program, individuals and organizations would be partners with the school district and a teacher to address specific needs for the classroom.
“What the school district really needs now is help getting those classrooms ready for the new school year,” said Kim Vann, community development director for the district, in a news release. “We want our students to be able to return to a warm and inviting environment on Aug. 17.”
She said in the statement that teachers must restock their classrooms with supplies and materials other than textbooks.
To adopt a classroom in Joplin schools, people may contact Vann at kvann@joplin.k12.mo.us. Potential donors are being asked to include a name, organization name and phone number in an email, or to call 417-625-5270, ext. 3430.
The school district also is accepting monetary donations for the Joplin Schools Tornado Relief Fund. Donations will be matched dollar for dollar up to $250,000. Donors are to write “matching grant” in the comments section of the check.
The donations may be mailed to Joplin Schools, attention Kim Vann, 102 S. Gray Ave., Joplin, MO 64801.
Minnesota-based Mackin Educational Resources has created a disaster relief Funds4Books donation program to help raise money to replace destroyed library collections in Joplin schools.
Mackin also will contribute an additional 10 percent to every $100 raised.
The Joplin Funds4Books program was created in partnership with the Missouri Association of School Librarians. Donations may be made at funds4books.com.
Every dollar donated to the Joplin Funds4Books program will be spent on books, DVDs, e-books and audiobooks to restock the school libraries, according to a statement from Mackin Educational Resources.
