Huge tornado hits Oklahoma City suburb, kills at least 51

A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

JOPLIN, Mo. — HOPE 4 You Breast Cancer Foundation has canceled the fourth annual Jewels of the Miles Race 4 HOPE.

The race will not be rescheduled until June 2012.

No more racer registrations are being accepted online or through the mail. Any registrations received after May 22 will be mailed back to the participant.

HOPE 4 You BCF announces that all money raised through sponsorships and current registrations received will be donated to the Joplin Tornado Relief Fund sponsored by the Heart of Missouri United Way in a total of $10,000. Heart of Missouri United Way, Columbia, has stepped up and established the Joplin Tornado Relief Fund, and 100 percent of donations will go directly to Joplin United Way, with zero overhead.

Local business Images In Tile and a noted marine-life artist are auctioning off two pieces of art to raise money for the Joplin School District’s art programs. One piece is a floor mural that Images In Tile replicated from artwork by Robert Wyland, who uses only the name Wyland.
