DONATE: Joplin schools receive donations

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin schools received donations this week totaling more than $19,000, including donations from Lions Club International, Jim West, a former city councilman, and the Joplin High School class of 1953.

Lions Clubs International presented a $5,000 check to Ashley Micklethwaite, Joplin school board president, toward the adopt-a-classroom initiative Wednesday night at the Holiday Inn, 3615 S. Range Line Rd. The money will be used to cover personal classroom supplies of five teachers who lost those items in the May 22 tornado.

The Joplin High School class of 1953 donated $13,000 to Joplin Schools at 10 a.m. this morning. The class of Õ53 is challenging other graduating classes to donate money. The money raised will go toward school supplies and came from all over the country.

Jim West presented $1,000 to Superintendent of Joplin Schools C.J. Huff at noon Thursday at the Missouri Department of Transportation, Joplin schools' new administrative headquarters. West, along with friends Mark McCarty and Kenny Shuler from Pipefitters Local Union 178 out of Springfield, donated the money toward the adopt-a-classroom initiative through Bright Futures.
