GALENA, Kan. —
Galena Fire Chief Bill Hall said it is a desire to help their neighbors that caused the Galena Fire Department to vote to donate proceeds from Galena Days to Joplin, Mo., tornado victims.
“We thought it was the right thing to do,” Hall said “It makes us happy that we can do it. There’s more to life than making dollars. Helping your neighbor is important.”
The fire department produces the annual event and ordinarily uses proceeds to buy equipment for the fire department. Hall said the event raises between $10,000 and $20,000 each year.
He said Miss Galena candidates also are donating their share of ticket sales for prize drawings toward tornado relief.
