Area pools ready for plunge; Schifferdecker opening still to be announced

Though this week’s mild temperatures may not signal swim season, most area pools are ready anyway. And, the mercury should rise a little this weekend to help those anxious to dive in. Highs will be in the low 80s today and Sunday. There is a chance for isolated thunderstorms on Monday, but the thermometer should hit 82 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

In response to the devastating tornado that destroyed three Joplin schools on May 22, Mackin Educational Resources, of Burnsville, Minn., has created a special Disaster Relief Funds4Books donation program to help raise the funds needed to replace the destroyed school library collections.

Joplin residents David and Debra Humphreys are making a personal gift of $250,000 to Joplin schools for the tornado rebuilding and recovery efforts. The Humphreys are also offering a Matching Challenge Grant of an additional $250,000.
