The board of trustees for the Joplin Tornado First Response Fund has begun taking requests for a second round of grants. Applications are due by 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16.
The fund was established after the May 22, 2011, tornado. The board awards grants to charitable organizations and governmental agencies that are providing relief to tornado victims, rebuilding or improving infrastructure, or enhancing disaster preparedness with improved warning and safety measures.
The board was appointed in February, and it had to develop and put in place bylaws and guidelines before any work to give out the money could begin.
Applicants may seek funding for multiple projects this round with a single application.
The board disbursed about $350,000 during the first round of grants earlier this year, and the fund last month had a balance of about $450,000.
Phil Stinnett, board chairman, said the board may grant applications for the total amount remaining in the fund, or it may use only a partial amount based on the merit of the requests.
Fourteen agencies and programs received money from the first round of grants. The recipients included the Area Agency on Aging, $40,000, for a new Meals on Wheels delivery truck to replace one destroyed in the storm; Legal Aid of Western Missouri, $20,000, to help pay for attorneys working on cases resulting from tornado problems; and Joplin Family Worship Center, $50,000, to provide food and housing for volunteers working in the storm zone, and assistance to affected families.
The fund also was used to provide free weather radios last spring to Joplin residents who wanted them.
