VIDEO: Tornado-damaged churches propose plans for services

JOPLIN, Mo. — The May 22 tornado hasn’t stopped several churches in the path of the storm from making plans for their first services since the disaster.

At Peace Lutheran Church, 2002 Wisconsin Ave., services will be held at 10 a.m. today in the parking lot. People are encouraged to bring chairs, because the pews have been destroyed.

About 50 families attend Peace Lutheran, which was originally built in 1965.

Murlin Hintz, a member since 1979, said the church hopes to rebuild on the property.

Parishioners of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 2415 South Moffet Ave., are encouraged to attend Mass at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 812 South Pearl Ave., where Bishop James Johnston will celebrate Masses today at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

“We just keep moving forward,” said Chris Oakes, a member of St. Mary’s parish council, who was working at the site Saturday.

Oakes said the council plans to meet Monday to regroup and potentially discuss rebuilding. He said the parish was planning on remodeling before the tornado, but will now rebuild and be bigger and better than before.

Louis Ochsenbein, who has been a member for 30 years, said that they have been digging out and have found the nearly 5-foot-tall crucifix from inside the rubble — only one hand has broken off.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 2423 W. 26th St., has changed the location of its services due to storm damage. Services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m. today at The Bridge, 3405 S. Hammons Blvd.
