JOPLIN, Mo. —
Between 7,000 and 8,000 volunteers are being recruited to help build homes in Joplin for the award-winning ABC television reality show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
The Homebuilders Association of Southwest Missouri and Millstone Custom Homes of Springfield made the announcement today.
The round-the-clock, weeklong building effort is to kick off the week of Oct. 19.
The exact number of homes to be built has not been determined and will depend on the number of volunteers, contributions and material donations made to the effort.
Each of the homes will be about 1,500 square feet and efforts are underway to find eligible families for the homes.
“They are doing what needs to be done in terms of building the right type of home for Joplin,” said Crystal Harrington, with the Homebuilders Association of Southwest Missouri.
The project is being developed with the goal of providing “anchor” construction to serve as a model for other developments in the city following the May 22 tornado.
