RESOURCE: Empire establishes $100,000 fund to help tornado-impacted customers

JOPLIN, Mo. — Empire District Electric Co. today announced a $100,000 Temporary Electric Energy Assistance Fund to help customers, with priority given to those affected by the May 22 tornado.

Economic Security Corp. will administer the fund. Martin Penning, Empire’s vice president of commercial operations, announced the program outside the ESC office building.

The program criteria include: The customer must be experiencing insufficient income to pay their electric bill resulting from the tornado; be age 65 or older; have a disability to prevents him from being economically self-sufficient; or be eligible for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program as determined by ESC. Successful applicants must meet at least one of the guidelines.

To apply, Empire customers should call Economic Security Corp. at (417) 781-0352, 1-800-932-2483, visit the ESC office at 302 Joplin Ave., or one of its outreach offices.

Empire is providing another $100,000 for low-income weatherization programs.
