Several area communities have canceled Christmas parades set for Saturday.
Officials in Baxter Springs, Kan., and in Galena, Kan., announced today that their annual Christmas parades have been canceled due to inclement weather.
A tree lighting scheduled for 6 p.m. today in Baxter Spring will still take place.
The Little Mr. & Miss Holiday crowning set for 10 a.m. Saturday in Baxter Springs also will take place at the Soda Fountain, 1136 Military Ave.
The Riverton, Kan., Christmas parade set for Saturday also has been canceled.
The weather forecast and the loss of numerous parade entries also were cited as the reason for the cancellation of the annual Neosho Christmas Parade on Saturday.
The parade will not be rescheduled.
“The double whammy of an ice storm (today) followed by below freezing temperatures on Saturday, and the loss of numerous parade entries due to the parade’s rescheduling has created a situation where canceling the 2013 Neosho Christmas Parade is the best decision for the safety of our citizens and preserving the integrity of our beautiful nighttime spectacular,” said Chamber executive Shana Griffin.
“The rescheduling from our original Dec. 6 date cost us numerous entries and would have produced a parade that doesn’t meet our expectations. The impending freezing rain and sub-freezing temperature forecast for Saturday also created concerns for safety, and made the decision to cancel inevitable.”
