Truckload of trucks: Joplin man keeps large collection

It’s probably safe to say that Larry Kelly knows more about trucks than the average 78-year-old.
It helps that he keeps some visual reminders around his room at the Silver Creek Assisted Living Center — nearly 300, actually. Of course, Kelly is more specific than that.

  • Mike Pound: Wife's punctuality amazes family
I’ll admit, I didn’t think she would make it. Neither did our 12-year-old daughter, Emma.

  • Mark Schuster: Favorites part of library’s recent musical additions
The Joplin Public Library just got a bit more country, and a lot more rock and roll. Because of a wonderful grant, the library was able to purchase more than 150 new audio CDs to increase its already widespread and diverse collection.

  • Frankie Meyer: Great TV series misleads about ease of family discoveries
An exceptional new series is being aired on NBC each Friday night at 7 p.m. “Who Do You Think You Are” is sure to increase an interest in family history research. It was created by Lisa Kudrow after she saw a similar program in Ireland. In each program a film crew follows a celebrity as he or she travels about the country and learns about ancestors and their lives.

  • Frankie Meyer: Book festival to feature local authors
The Cowskin Prairie Book Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 27 at the Community Center (also known as City Hall) in Grove, Okla.

  • Cari Boatright Rerat: Biography captures couple’s relationship amidst controversy
Normally, I don’t read nonfiction. I want action. I want characters I can like or dislike; heroes and villains.
I want to escape into a good story. I don’t want to feel like I have to trudge through a book because “it’s good for me.”

  • Mike Pound: Dialing up the satellites
Basically I’m a pretty tolerant guy. I don’t mind, for example, when my wife and 12-year-old daughter, Emma, decide that they have to watch that “Dancing with the People Who at One Time Were Almost Stars” show during dinner.

  • Artistic endeavor: Neosho artists form arts council
Residents could soon have more options to participate in the arts thanks to the recently launched Arts Council. Members of the council are dedicated to “improving our community through growing appreciation and participation in the arts,” Chair John Mills said. “Of course that’s all arts, whether it’s performing or visual or graphic arts.”

  • Church briefs

  • Rich Brown: Number 40 significant in Bible
Under the umbrella of Christianity, there is nothing more meaningful than Easter and the 40 days preceding it, Lent. When I think of Easter and the awesome resurrection of Christ, I never fail to ponder the importance of those 40 days leading up to it, which is a time to search one’s soul, reflect, take stock and, yes, repent.

  • SHNS: Vatican launching iPhone app to reach masses
The Vatican is launching an iPhone application, and it chose a California priest to deliver the app’s inspirational message.

  • Benji Tunnell: ‘Green Zone’ entertaining for an agenda film
When Hollywood decides to do its take on war stories, it should be done with care and caution, for it doesn’t just dwell in the realm of fiction. Following on the heels of “The Hurt Locker” winning Best Picture, Matt Damon again teams with his Bourne director Paul Greengrass to give us “Green Zone,” the latest Hollywoodization of the events in Iraq, and one that will certainly not please all who see it.

  • Dave Woods: Missouri beer, vodka pleasing

  • Iconic photographer’s work lives on CDs
Now 70 years old, William Eggleston is one of the most enduringly fashionable figures in rock ’n’ roll, despite never releasing a note of recorded music. With his lurid snapshots of ordinary scenes shot around his hometown of Memphis and the Mississippi Delta, Eggleston is mostly known as the photographer who made color photography a respectable art form.

  • Joe Hadsall: Plan for cover photo comes together
To quote A-Team ringleader Col. “Hannibal” Smith: I love it when a plan comes together. Don’t ask me why, but when I first heard about Raycliff Manor’s “Ghouls Gone Wild,” I had a mental picture of a bunch of ghostly creatures, in drunken idiot fashion, harassing a bartender.

  • Scared to skid? Course lets teens practice slick driving
Learning to drive is tough enough. But throw a few inches of water or snow on the roads, and teen drivers have an even more daunting challenge ahead of them. “It’s scary,” said Kelsa Ferguson, 17, of Neosho. “And uncomfortable.”

  • Stone’s Throw tackles tough title
Vicki Gail Dickey knew she had her work cut out for her. She hadn’t directed a play in years, and she had picked a tough title. Yet she jumped at the chance to front a production of “Proof.” The play started its run at the Stone’s Throw Dinner Theater on Thursday and runs until March 28.

  • Scream break: Raycliff Manor’s spooks return for spring fling
The ghouls and ghosts who haunt Raycliff Manor every Halloween return in March for a final spring fling. “Ghouls Gone Wild” is a one-weekend spring break event at the haunted house. — an encore performance of last year’s haunting season.

  • Church briefs

  • Rich Brown: Retired pastor ready to establish new church
Bert Ott retired from the ministry two years ago. But, at 71, he’s ready to resume his pastoral duties on a moment’s notice if he could open a German-speaking church in the Joplin area.
