Local club raising money to buy wheelchairs for patients in Nassau, Bahamas

Sid Davis has an odd talent. If you turn around, he’ll be able to guess your wheelchair size. Davis developed his talent while delivering the gift of mobility to people in Cancun, Mexico. He and several other members of the Joplin Rotary Club in April gave 240 wheelchairs to people in need.....more>>

  • Mike Pound: Shopping can turn that frown upside down
I used to be good at changing Emma’s moods. I used to be good at making her laugh when she really didn’t want to laugh. But lately I’ve sort of hit a mood-changing slump.

  • Book review: Fiction titles with historical bent make fascinating reads
Kathryn Stockett is an extraordinary storyteller whose debut novel begs to be opened. Readers will find themselves transported to the segregated South during the beginning stages of the civil rights movement and will be turning pages long into the night.

  • Work to be done: Father-son business keeps pair busy in gym, doing PI work, helping kids
The Joplin father and son have seen their interests combined into a hard-hitting work ethic that keeps them busy training fighters, sleuthing, hauling and setting up a giant steel cage all over the state, and working to help children caught in an abusive situation.

  • Rich Brown: Missionaries in need
To say the life of a missionary is not an easy one could be the biggest understatement ever — especially in the case of Eric and Jennifer Lotz.

  • Church briefs
Homecoming Sunday will be observed at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Iron Gates Christian Church, 2310 Iron Gates Road. Bill Richey will be the featured speaker.

  • AP: Los Angeles church goes to the dogs
The Rev. Tom Eggebeen came up with a hair-raising idea: He would turn God’s house into a doghouse by offering a 30-minute service complete with individual doggie beds, canine prayers and an offering of dog treats.

  • Genre journey
Though her music spans several styles, the Grammy-nominated Jewel says it all comes from the same place. Jewel will sing some of her songs during a solo acoustic show Sunday at Downstream Casino — the same kind of performance that landed her the record deal that eventually produced her 1995 breakthrough, “Pieces of You.”

  • Ballet plans ‘Cinderella’ performances
The Midwest Regional Ballet has scheduled performances for its latest offering, a production of “Cinderella.”

  • Benji Tunnell: ‘Brothers’ enjoyable
Life is full of cons. Whether it is that job that just doesn’t turn out the way it was supposed to, the friend who isn’t quite who he claimed to be or the girlfriend who professes undying love while bagging half of the football team on the side, it seems that there’s a seedy side to so many things.

  • Quartet to feature a few hidden gems
Zemlinsky Quartet appears as part of Pro Musica season.

  • Database lets you become a Global Road Warrior
If I was lucky enough to be able to accompany the torch, I might need some travel information on both Greece and Canada. Global Road Warrior can answer just about any question I might have on Greece, Canada or 173 other countries and territories around the world.

  • Mike Pound: 'Friendly' persuasion
My wife prefaced her remarks about loading the rest of the stuff into my car with the words “If you want.” I didn’t want. So I didn’t.

  • AP: Evangelists target spiritually cold New England
It’s hard to tell in the quiet of a color-splashed autumn morning, but Redeemer Fellowship Church is trying to set roots in a rough neighborhood. For churches, anyway.

  • Reed Dunn: Luther's actions spawned a Christian revolution
October 31 is a big day for Protestants. It may not be as fun as candy corn and Snickers bars, but it is hard to look around Joplin and not see the effects of this historic day.

  • Church briefs
Joplin Church Women United will celebrate World Community Day on Friday at Unity Baptist Church, 615 S. Minnesota Ave.

  • The write stuff: Class motivated by teacher's story to better themselves w/letters from Erin Gruwell
Journaling has been an emphasis in Kimberly Rhea's communications class, and one that students learned to appreciate more last year after Rhea let them view the 2007 movie “Freedom Writers.”

  • Book review: Bring an appetite for ‘500 Things to Eat’
Divided into six regions (New England, Mid Atlantic, South, Midwest, Southwest, and West), it details the foods of each region and the best restaurants and food stands to find and enjoy them.

  • Mike Pound: Can't see the hall for the tree
I had been married for about five years before I found out what a baker’s rack was. And I had been married for about seven years before I found out what a hall tree was.

  • AP: R. Crumb creates illustrated "Book of Genesis"
The creator of comic book characters like the R-rated Fritz the Cat and the bizarre Mr. Natural has finally put that religious training to good use.
