Rich Brown: Events planned to showcase the power of prayer

Debbie Kenny knows. Daryl Billings believes it. Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan confirmed it with their presidential actions: Prayer has the power to move mountains.

And next Thursday many people in Joplin and the entire nation will be coming together to try and make that statement a reality. Kenny, vice president of the Joplin Area Ministerial Alliance, has been working diligently toward making arrangements on the local front for the National Day of Prayer.

Even though there were several national days of prayer in the United States before Truman made it official by signing a bill proclaiming the nationwide prayer day in 1952, it took Reagan, 36 years later, to ink another bill decreeing it to be on the first Thursday in May.

When May 1 rolls around next Thursday, Billings will have already taken a huge step toward praying for the Joplin area and our nation as a whole. In fact, Billings, director of the CrossRoads International House of Prayer, and other prayer warriors throughout the area, just completed an overnight session of prayer and fasting that ended at 6 o’clock this morning.

In this column last week, Billings stressed the importance of God and his people being connected this way:

“God is exploding all over the world, with the prayer and worship movement unlike anything we have ever seen before. God is exploding with people who have hearts to hear and reach out to others through Him. There is a seriousness about hearing God and obeying.”

For many, Thursday will be a time for people to reach out to God and pray for a multitude of things as well as give thanks.

Kenny, in explaining how God has blessed the Joplin area from small to large endeavors, including the industrial and business community, said we need to express our gratitude.

“We need to be very grateful and give thanks for what God has done,” she said.

Kenny said that it falls upon her office as JAMA vice president to be in charge of such events as the Day of Prayer, which is sponsored by the ministerial group.

The NDP kickoff comes mighty early in Joplin. A free breakfast, open to the public, will be served at 6:45 a.m. (with doors open at 6:30) in the multipurpose building at Ozark Christian College, 1111 N. Main St.

“About 7 a.m. we will actually start praying,” Kenny said. “We will pray for the nation, the state, the medical and educational professions, pastors and those who serve in their churches and those in the business community. Mayor Gary Shaw will be the master of ceremonies and lead us in the pledge of allegiance.”

Kenny added that Shaw did all the fund-raising for the breakfast, which comes out of the JAMA Day of Prayer Fund. She added that everything should be finished and everyone dismissed by 8 a.m.

That will complete part one, with two more events to come.

Next up, prayer at City Hall.
