I never thought I had a green thumb.
Perhaps it’s because we never had any plants at my house growing up, because anything that came in was destined to leave in a plant body bag.
I did do some sort of take-home experiment that had to do with growing seeds in middle school, but I can’t quite remember what happened to them after they sprouted and the project was finished. Maybe they’re growing in a landfill somewhere.
Anyway, the gist of the story is, I’ve never really grown anything.
So you can imagine my surprise when I found myself working at a nursery a few months ago.
I needed the money, and they had a job available, and they didn’t care if I knew anything about plants, as long as I didn’t mind getting a little dirty.
Who knew that you could know nothing about plants and still work at a nursery.
So, I tried it out. Mostly what I did was pot plants that were shipped with no dirt. Even I know that dirt is one of the three things that plants definitely need to grow, so that’s kind of important.
I potted all kinds of stuff — bulbs, roses, things that had little bitty roots and things that had substantial roots. Most of it I’d never heard of.
The great thing is, they all had tags, and the tags had pictures.
The bad thing is, most of them were pretty, which meant I wanted to grow them at my house.
This is bad for two reasons:
1. These living things might die under my care.
2. I will have to pay for these things, which might die under my care.
So I started off small. When we were potting the plants that were already growing, there were parts that would fall off that would have a little growing part and a little root. These we called “fally offies.”
