Published July 11, 2008 06:34 pm - Some thoughts have been swishing around in my head lately, and it’s time to let them loose.

Anne Kettenbrink: Wanderings of the mind

You know how when you go swimming and you get water in your ear, and it itches and it bugs you because you can hear it in there? Then you tip your head and the water drains out onto the ground and you feel better?

Well, some thoughts have been swishing around in my head lately, and it’s time to let them loose.

* I was driving around town at 9 p.m. on the Fourth of July, and I couldn’t believe my eyes at all of the fireworks going off everywhere. I didn’t know where to look. It was pretty, but I was worried people were going to spend too much time looking at fireworks and not the road. I also wondered where everyone got all this money to blow up.

And the next day, of course, 35,000 people waiting in traffic and lines to participate in the opening of the new Downstream Casino, which is pretty much a non-essential expense in my book.

Apparently, this area has been very good at stimulating the economy lately. Congress would be proud.

* People need to learn how to clean up after themselves. As in, when you eat something with a wrapper, throw it away. When you drink a soda out of a can, recycle the can. When you have fast food in your car, put the trash back in the bag it came in and throw it away at your house, not out your window. Your mom is the only person on Earth who doesn’t mind picking up your messes, and she doesn’t follow you around all day picking up your messes. So give the rest of us a break and act like an adult.

* For people who use West 32nd Street: The lanes have changed, and they’re not very well-marked now. Where you used to drive is now a turn lane, and if you don’t want to turn, you might get stuck. Please don’t cut off other traffic if this happens. That’s how accidents happen. Hopefully, the lanes will be marked better in the future.

* It’s a good thing Penn National operated under different rules than 17-year-old girls. Some other companies were in negotiations to buy out the casino company, but the deal fell through. Those companies still had to pay Penn National $1.5 billion. I guess that’s like a “sorry we got your hopes up” payoff. If this were the case for everyone, there would be a bunch of rich 17-year-olds out there.

I think there are some people out there who owe me some money, too.

* The birds are back downtown. Apparently, the bird cannon we shot off failed to dissuade them from taking up residence in Spiva Park this year, and I think they brought all their friends, too, because it seems worse.

I never understood people who disliked birds, who thought they were gross and scary.

These birds have done it. I hate them. They are stupid and gross.

Just try driving or walking in that area in the evening hours and not getting freaked out by the fact that you can’t see the sky. All you can see is the birds. Circling. Squawking. Circling. Squawking.

After what happened last year, I am scared to cross the street. I’m considering getting a new umbrella, to shield me from, shall we say, bird by-products.

That way, the only thing I’ll have to empty out of my ear will be my random thoughts.
