Manhunt ongoing in woods of McDonald County

Two Neosho police officers injured

Police are searching for a man they said shot two Neosho police officers early Friday morning.

Officer Michael Sharp remains hospitalized after suffering a gunshot wound in the face. Sgt. Dan Cook was released from the hospital after treatment for a gunshot wound on his arm.

Police said Cook initiated a traffic stop on Adam Bridgewater, who was known to have active warrants, near Spring Street and White Avenue in Neosho. Police said Bridgewater then opened fire on Cook and fled after the two exchanged shots. Bridewater was driving red, Chevy Trailblazer.

Sharp led the pursuit of the suspect to Mallard Road and Highway 86, police said, before the suspect suddenly stopped and fired a shot through Sharp’s windshield, striking him in the face.

Officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol located the suspect’s vehicle a short time later, police said, and gunfire was once again exchanged.

A McDonald County sheriff’s deputy then found the suspect’s vehicle crashed on a road just east of Goodman, police said, and more gunfire was exchanged before the suspect fled on foot.

According to Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland, a manhunt is underway in the woods of McDonald County. Departments searching are Neosho Police Department, Newton County Sheriff’s Department, McDonald County Sheriff’s Department, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri Highway Patrol and several other surrounding departments. A helicoptor provided by the Benton County Sheriff’s Department out of Arkansas is also being used in the hunt, as well as bloodhounds.

Copeland said it is believed the suspect may have been injured during the exchange of gunfire. A large number of guns and ammunition were found in Bridgwater’s vehicle.
