By spelling litterateur and basilica, Christopher Smith, of Monett, became the champion of The Joplin Globe's 2009 Spelling Bee. He is a fifth-grade student at Trinity Lutheran School in Freistatt.



Rachel Peterson, a sixth-grader at St. Peter's Middle School, won second place. Devon Russell, a fifth-grader at College Heights Christian School, finished in third place.



92 students competed in the bee, held Wednesday at Taylor Performing Arts Center on the MSSU campus. Competitors in the bee were winners of spelling bees at their schools.
