The city of Joplin may have to keep a section of East Seventh Street closed to traffic until at least 5 p.m. today because of the damage from the early morning fire at Reeves Tire & Automotive, 806 E. Seventh St.

The street is closed from Kentucky to Illinois avenues because crews are working on utility poles that were heavily damaged and are not safe. Joplin’s engineering department asks that sightseers stay out of the area so that workers can get the damage fixed without interference. Public safety, fire and utility company crews are on the scene.

Fire was discovered there at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday. The Joplin Fire Department found heavy smoke with flames coming from the back of a display at the business. Within minutes, an overhead door collapsed, giving vent to the fire, which spread to the rest of building.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire.

A cause is yet unknown.
