Joplin police nabbed a suspect Wednesday night responding to a report of a burglary in progress at 920 E. 15th St.
A caller at work in a business at that location reported seeing a man in the parking lot at 9:15 p.m. and hearing the sound of glass breaking. Police say a burglar had broken a window at the business and was starting to crawl in when officers arrived and he fled on foot.
Capt. Trevor Duncan of the Joplin Police Department said in a news release that officers were able to contain the fleeing man to the 1600 block of South Indiana Avenue, where they eventually found him hiding under a truck. Because he would not comply with officers' commands for him to crawl out from under the truck, pepper spray was deployed to gain compliance, Duncan said.
Justin M. Winters, 37, reportedly continued to struggle with officers even after being forced out from under the truck and was taken to Joplin City Jail on suspicion of burglary and resisting arrest.
