A judge in Jasper County Circuit Court sentenced a 31-year-old man to five years in prison Monday for assaulting another man at the Souls Harbor shelter in Joplin.
Judge Gayle Crane assessed Brandon L. Schriner concurrent terms of five years for second-degree assault and two years for resisting arrest related to an incident March 31 in the shelter at 915 S. Main St. Schriner had pleaded guilty to the charges Sept. 16 in a plea deal calling for the length of sentences he received.
A probable-cause affidavit filed with the charges states that Schriner pushed Kevin W. Elbert, 54, of Carthage, up against a wall and began choking him when Elbert asked him to leave the shelter for a violation of its rules. Schriner tried to flee on a moped as police arrived on the scene and threw objects at the officers who pursued him.
Elbert was treated at a hospital for injuries following the incident.
