MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — A Mount Vernon dentist was ordered bound over for trial this week in Lawrence County Circuit Court on three counts of Medicaid fraud and a single count of obstruction.

Associate Court Judge Scott Sifferman found probable cause at a preliminary hearing Thursday to order Thomas H. Alms, 62, to stand trial on the charges and set the defendant's initial appearance in a trial division of the court for Feb. 13.

A probable-cause affidavit filed by an investigator with the Medicaid fraud control unit of the Missouri attorney general's office states that between Aug. 17, 2014, and June 14, 2016, the defendant submitted claims to MO HealthNet for dental services to 26 Medicaid participants, including pre-orthodontic visits, office visits, pulp vitality tests, bone grafting and restorations.

The affidavit alleges that claims submitted for 15 pre-orthodontic visits, 15 office visits, 11 bone replacement grafts and 11 restorations were fraudulent. The document further alleges that when the Medicaid fraud control unit subpoenaed his patient records, he submitted records that contained false representations.
